If there's no talking snake, what is the creature in Genesis 3?

Satan used the snake as his instrument for tempting eve. Satan did not reveal his own identity. God punished the snake for what satan did perhaps because it would be a symbolic reminder to man of satan's future destruction, and a symbolic reminder of how the serpent was used as an instrument and fell into sin.
